Only 10 illegal fish pens remaining

THE last 10 remaining illegal fish pens in Dagupan would have been demolished by May 31 by the city’s special task force if the owners had not voluntarily done so.

The 10 cover an approximately one-hectare area in Talaib-Tocok in the southern portion of the Calmay River.

“I am sure that by May 31, they will not be operating any more because dredging of the Calmay River has already started,” said City Agriculturist Emma Molina, head of Task Force Bantay Ilog formed by Mayor Belen Fernandez to demolish all the illegal fish pens in the rivers of Dagupan City.

As of April 30, there were still 39 units of fish pens from around 400 units that proliferated in the rivers of Dagupan during the administration of Fernandez’s predecessor, former Mayor Benjamin Lim.

Molina said on Wednesday last week that of the 39 units that were left after the April 30 deadline set by the city government for voluntary demolition, at least 29 units with a total area of 12.9 hectares have already been demolished.

The 29 units were among the biggest fish pens that were built in the rivers of Dagupan owned by non-residents.—LVM
