Mahogany tree planting marks environment month
MALASIQUI—Some 1, 000 mahogany seedlings were planted in the two- hectare vacant lot inside Malasiqui Central School here by multi-sector agencies in celebration of environment month.
Engr. Raymundo Gayo of the Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) in Dagupan City led the activity in partnership with the Department of Education (DepEd), the local government of Malasiqui, Salvation Army and a non-government organization based in United States.
The project is under the National Greening Program’s (NGP) urban plantation intended to minimize air pollution in town centers.
The CENRO and DepEd signed a memorandum of agreement (MOA) indicating their partnership in protecting the seedlings and ensuring its healthy growth.
Seedlings planted in urban areas have a higher survival rate compared to those in mountainous areas as these are easily monitored and watered but are at risk from animal and human threats being in populated areas, Gayo explained.
Malasiqui Mayor Armando Domantay Sr. also pledged support saying, “We are plan to have a MOA with PNP to help us regulate stray animals like goats and cows from eating the seedlings and plants around the town,” Domantay said.
Domantay also appealed to his town mates to refrain from burning garbage and dried leaves and instead bury these or convert the into fertilizer that could be used by the farmers in their community.—Hilda M. Austria
