Journalists honored on Independence Day
ROSALES—In a country considered to be among the most dangerous places in the world for journalists, the Philippine media continues to struggle as it carries out its role as society’s watchdog.
To pay tribute to members of the press, past and present, for their role in the fight for the country’s freedom, SM Rosales unveiled an 8’x 2’x 5.5’ three-dimensional Philippine flag in commemoration of the 116th Philippine Independence Day last June 12.
The flag was made out of 1,292 kilos of newspapers or 3,486 rolls containing 48,804 spreads, and 195,216 pages.
SM Rosales mall manager Jersey Mendoza said “the centerpiece is one way of showing how writing became an instrument in expressing our ideas both in the past and today”.
The use of recycled newspapers for the centerpiece was also part of SM City Rosales’ greening campaign.—Tita Roces and Johanne R. Macob
