Food for Work program in Dagupan

A FOOD for Work program that gives communities full responsibility in cleaning their environment was officially launched in the 31 barangays in Dagupan last week.

Mayor Belen Fernandez led the launching with City Engineer Virginia Rosario when they inspected the progress of the clean-up drive in Barangays Bonuan Gueset, Bonuan Boquig, Bonuan Binloc, Herrero Perez, Mayombo, Pogo Chico, Barangay IV, and Pantal.

Under the program, residents volunteering to help clean esteros and other barangay waterways are given food items in exchange for their labor.

Through this program, Fernandez said the clearing of clogged esteros and collection of wastes from drainage systems will minimize flooding in the city.

“To support the mayor’s vision for a Green Dagupan, we are launching the Food for Work program to encourage more residents to actively participate in clean-up activities.” said Rosario.

Residents who took part in the activity removed wastes and sediments that accumulated in canals as well as water hyacinths and weeds that usually clog esteros during the rainy season.

The mayor said the cleaning and clearing of the esteros will help reduce incidence of dengue cases since the activity destroys breeding places of mosquitos carrying the disease.

Fernandez also announced plans of the city to buy two backhoes and additional equipment to regularly augment the local clean-up efforts and dredging operation.–LVM
