Dengue cases recorded by the provincial health office (PHO) from January to June 16 this year decreased by 35% as compared to the same period last year.
Dr. Anna De Guzman, provincial health officer, said only 395 dengue cases were documented in the first half of 2014, lower than the 600 last year.

Calasiao, Mangaldan and Sta. Barabara have been removed from the watch list as these have not recorded dengue cases in the past five months.
However, the number of dengue victims in Asingan significantly increased from four last year to 45 so far this year.
De Guzaan said her department has been conducting quarterly meetings with the local health office of the towns and cities that were placed in last year’s watch list.
LEPTOSPIROSIS
Meanwhile, two leptospirosis cases with one death were recorded from January to June 16.
The disease claimed the life of one farmer from Manaoag who, De Guzman said, might have neglected taking medication after being exposed to water with leptospirosis virus.
The virus sets in two days to four weeks following the exposure to an infected water and the victim neglected to take medication, De Guzman said.
The PHO is also monitoring other water borne diseases such gastroenteritis, typhoid and diarrhea, all common during rainy season.
The victims of these diseases are usually children ages 12- 19.–Hilda M. Austria
