THE first batch of 587 students who joined the free swimming course given by the local government of Dagupan City and the Bert Lozada Swim School have completed their training and graduated last June 7.
The swimming course is a project of BTF DOES IT or Building the Future: Developing Our Excellence in Sports, a program that aims to develop and enhance the potential of local athletes.
It is also in line with the city government’s family disaster preparedness program, which intends to equip children with swimming skills to prevent drowning in case of flooding.
Speaking during the graduation ceremony at the Dagupan People’s Astrodome, Mayor Belen Fernandez said, “Priority will always be given to our children. That is why we provided them with this swimming lesson for free so that they know how to bring themselves and others to safety.”
The mayor also thanked the Bert Lozada Swim School for partnering with the local government by sending instructors to teach local trainers on water safety and disaster management.
Finnela Sim, BTF: DOES IT project coordinator, said after the initial swimming program, there will also be a program for 40 swimmers who will undergo intensive training for possible participation in regional and national competitions. (CIO)
