Mayors won’t join BMs in NPC resignation

THE provincial chapter of the Nationalist Peoples Coalition (NPC) is far from being described as a sinking ship.

While the provincial board members have made their sentiments known publicly by resigning their memberships in the party, the municipal mayors take a different view.

Most municipal mayors of Pangasinan are inclined to stay put rather than become partyless.

This is the view expressed by Mayor Noel Nacar of Dasol as president of the Pangasinan Mayors’ League as he reiterated that his fellow mayors are not affected by the mass resignation of seven-nine board members from the NPC.

“There is no point on the part of municipal mayors affiliated with the NPC to also resign from the party,” said Nacar speaking during the KBP forum here on Thursday.

Nacar was made to react to the copy of the letter signed by the board members resigning from the party effective June 1, 2014.

Citing his own example, Nacar said how can he leave the NPC when in fact it is the only party he affiliated with since becoming mayor of Dasol.

“During my first term as mayor, I was independent. In my second term of office, it was the same. But on my third term, I ran under the banner of NPC”, Nacar said.

He asked:  “Where will I go if I leave NPC? Shall I go back as independent? Will my people still call me as their leader if I will go back as independent?”

Nacar said this is also the dilemma of many other municipal mayors affiliated with NPC.

“They would think twice before deciding to bid NPC goodbye,” he said.

When asked by newsmen if he is willing to bolt NPC if another party offers him and fellow members slots in that party, Nacar replied” I probably will not but I will consult my constituents, like what I did when offered to join NPC less than two years ago.”

Nacar flatly denied speculations that a Cojuangco-Nacar tandem in 2016 polls after the two were seen together in some town fiestas in western Pangasinan.

He said like former Congressman Cojuangco, he was also invited by his colleagues in their fiestas being the president of the league of mayors.

He pointed out that when the son and namesake of Gov. Espino visited a barangay in his town of Dasol, he said he was also with the younger Espino.

Nacar affirmed his continued support to the administration of Gov. Espino, its programs and projects to build a better Pangasinan.
