DAGUPAN BANGUS IN ASEAN MARKET

SENATOR Benigno “Bam” Aquino IV sees a bright future for the Dagupan bangus in the world market, especially in the face of the  ASEAN (Association of South East Asian Nations) Economic Integration that will be fully implemented next year.

The same optimism was expressed by officials of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) who served as resource speakers during the Regional Bangus Summit held last April 23 as part of the Bangus Festival 2014.

Aquino, interviewed by newsmen during the Bangus Festival culminating activity on April 30, noted that the Dagupan bangus is already being exported to Thailand, Indonesia and Vietnam.

“They say that the ASEAN Economic Integration will start in 2015  but actually, this already started few years ago. In fact, most of our products and services were already integrated in the economies of our neighboring countries,” said Aquino.

But with the reinforcement of the economic integration in years ahead, Aquino stressed that the Philippines will have to strengthen small and micro entrepreneurs to be more competitive.

“Often, we see this (ASEAN economic integration) as a threat, a bane to local businessmen. But in truth, this can become an opportunity,” he pointed out.

Corollary to this, he announced that his bill seeking to create “Go Negosyo Central ” in the provincial, city and municipal levels where small and micro businessmen can go and seek help has already been approved by the Senate.

The bill has yet to be tackled in the House of Representatives.—LVM
