Comelec reports high turnout in registration
VOTERS in Pangasinan appear to be keen on participating in the 2016 national and local elections judging from the high voter turnout during the first week of registration, according to the Commission on Elections (Comelec).
Lawyer Marino Salas, provincial election supervisor, reported that 2,400 new voters registered and 4,343 listed voters had their data validated for biometric registration in the first week that started on May 6.
An estimated 325,000 voters in Pangasinan, one of the top three provinces in voting population with more than one million, are required to undergo validation.
The target for new voters, on the other hand, is 230,000.
The biometric registration will be open until Oct. 31, 2015.
The Comelec is also holding a nationwide walk dubbed “Walkah Walkah: Step Juan Tungo sa Mulat na Botante” to call attention to the need for registered voters to have their data validated under the new biometric system.
Salas joined Comelec spokesperson James Jimenez last Tuesday for the walk which passed through Barangay Agat in Sison town where an off-site registration was undertaken and a forum was held to answer voter inquiries.
Under the law, registered voters who do not undergo the biometric data capture will not be allowed to vote in the 2016 elections.
The Walkah-Walkah made stops in Barangay Alipangpang, Pozorrubio town, Urdaneta City, and Rosales town.
Comelec offices are open on Sundays to accommodate those who are working on weekdays.—Tita Roces and Dada Austria with report from PIA1-Pangasinan/VHS
