EARTHQUAKE RISK MANAGEMENT

THE Public Alert and Response Management Center (PARMC) of Dagupan and the Philippine Institute of Volcanoloy and Seismology (Phivolcs) conducted a seminar on Building Exposure Database Module (EDM) on April 4 and 5 for the preparation of a building database in the city.

Angelito G. Lanuza, Phivolcs’ Senior Science Research, said the seminar taught the participants how to prepare a database of buildings, including the number of occupants in a single structure.

“EDM is very important for earthquake risk assessment. Through this system, the city can map the different building types in its area and the number of occupants in each building. This will help the city reduce the number of fatalities and damaged buildings before any disaster strikes and possibly for zero casualties,” explained Lanuza.

The participants in the two-day seminar were members of Spectrum, Deltacom, City Assessor’s Office, City Astrodome, City Treasurer’s Office, Mangaldan Engineering Department, Lyceum Northwestern University College of Engineering, University of Luzon College of Engineering and the Philippine Navy.

The database will also be used to identify buildings which can be used as evacuation centers in case of a tsunami. (CIO)
