GILON GILON ED BALEY

THIS year’s Bangus Festival formally opened on April 22 with the Gilon- Gilon ed Baley street dancing competition, featuring dances that simulate the harvesting of bangus.

Twenty-two contingents from the 31 barangays of this city marched and performed through the city streets from Perez Boulevard to M.H. del Pilar and A.B. Fernandez Avenue, then delivering their grand routine at the city plaza.

Barangay Pantal was adjudged champion, winning a cash prize of P120,000  and the chance to represent Dagupan City in the Festivals of the North, also a main event of the Bangus Festival, to be held on April 27.

The other winners were: Hall of Famer Barangay Lucao (1st runner-up), Caranglaan (2nd runner-up), Bolosan (3rd runner-up) and Tebeng (4th runner- up).  also won the special awards for best in costume and best in musicality, respectively.

Pantal actually snapped the eight-year winning streak of Lucao that won the competition since 2006.

Mayor Belen Fernandez was delighted at the dance routines, which this year were based on actual observance of the harvesting process and training the choreographers of the contingents.

“With the authenticity of our new dance steps we can now proudly say that Gilon- Gilon is truly ours,” said Fernandez.

Special guests during the event were former movie star and now Paranaque City Councilor Alma Moreno-Salic and the cast of GMA network’s Innamorata.

Moreno lauded the unity and cooperation of the Dagupenos saying, “I will surely tell my mayor about everything that I saw in your festivity which can be adopted in our Sambalelo festival in Paranaque.”
