Kids with kawasaki syndrome get help

THREE children believed to be suffering from a very rare disease called Kawasaki syndrome were provided special medical care by the City Health Office here on order of Mayor Belen T. Fernandez.

Dr. Leonard L. Carbonell said the city will continue to monitor the children’s condition as they still run the risk of having possible heart complications during their recovery period after their discharge from the hospital.

Carbonell explained that cardiac complications are the most common risk from that disease that affects children, boys more commonly than girls, under five years old.

“Kawasaki disease is an auto-immune disease which inflames the medium-sized blood vessels of the body. It also affects the skin, mucous membranes, and lymph nodes,” he said, adding  that like all auto-immune diseases, the cause of Kawasaki disease is presumably the interaction of genetic and environmental factors, possibly including an infection.

The children, whose names were withheld, were reported to come from the same family line. (CIO)
