Cops dismissed for violence against women and children

SOME police men and women charged with Violence Against Women and Children (VAWC), including cases of infidelity and failing to provide support for their respective legal families, have been dismissed from service.

Lawyer Monday Samson, provincial director of the National Police Commission (NAPOLCOM), siad that about 50 cases filed last year against policemen that fall under VAWC have been resolved and decided.

However, Samson said he cannot identify those who were dismissed and acquitted pending the official release of the decisions.

Apart from dismissal, other punishments for grave misconduct are suspension and demotion.
Samson said cases have been forwarded to the NAPOLCOM central office for final approval of the resolutions.

He said there are only less than 10 pending cases in Pangasinan and these are mostly about VAWC involving “financial abuse” rather than physical.

Samson noted that the number of complaints against policemen lodged at their office shows public confidence in NAPOLCOM.

“Once a complaint is filed and the complainant is subsequently hurt, we have a likely suspect right away,” he added.

Samson also assured that once a case is filed, the complainant gets protection against any threat from the concerned officer.—Tita Roces and Johanne R. Macob
