TRAFFIC EXPERIMENT

THE traffic experiment launched by the Dagupan City government in March this year has been recommended for adoption permanently with minimal amendment.

The recommendation was made by retired Police Inspector Carlito Ocampo, chief of the City Assistance Service Team (CAST), who supervised the traffic experiment along with the Public Order and Safety Office (POSO).

The experiment provided for 15 jeepney loading and unloading zones in different parts of the downtown area, which drivers want increased to 21.

Ocampo observed that with 15 loading and unloading zones alone, the chokepoints in the downtown area, especially during the rush hour, had already been eliminated.

The temporary traffic experiment will be in effect until May 31.

A new ordinance will have to be passed by the council to make the traffic program permanent.

At the same time, Ocampo reported to Mayor Belen Fernandez that the crackdown on colorum tricycles in Dagupan City is continuing.

He said the colorum tricycles are no longer plying major routes and have limited their operations in the outskirts of the city to evade members of Task Force Anti-Colorum, also headed by Ocampo.

“But knowing this, we have also started to operate in the outskirts of the city,” he added.

Meanwhile, Fernandez bared her plan to strictly implement the law against jaywalking to impose discipline on pedestrians.

She directed City Engineer Virginia Rosario to coordinate with the District Office of the City Engineering Office for the immediate repainting of pedestrian lanes in the downtown area.

“There is now noticeable discipline among drivers and commuters, that is why there must be corresponding discipline to be adopted by pedestrians,” said Fernandez.–LVM
