Cherry blooms in Binmaley center
BINMALEY—This coastal municipality will celebrate Pista’y Dayat on May 1 with the planting of Palawan cherry around the Poblacion area to give the town center a unique, comely look.
Josefina Victorio, consultant to Mayor Simplicio Rosario and in charge of tourism affairs, said JC Buendia, one of the country’s popular fashion designers, initiated the project and will be present during the planting of about 70 saplings.
“Six years after they shall have been planted and grown, our Poblacion area would be a sight to behold,” Victorio said.
Victorio said the trees would be identical to Japan’s cherry blossom once they are in full bloom.
The Palawan cherry saplings from Manila were donated by citizens and each tree will have an identified sponsor responsible for the tree’s care and maintenance.
Palawan cherry is a small to medium-sized tree, growing up to15 meters with a diameter of about 50 centimeters (cm). The leaves are pinnate, 40 cm long, while the leaflets are ovate, with acute tip, 7 cm long and 3.5 cm wide, green in color and smooth on both surfaces. Flowering branches are usually drooping, 30 cm long. The light pink flowers are in loose panicles.
This plant is widespread in the province of Palawan, planted in parks, gardens, and at the edge of forests.
Meanwhile, other Pista’y Dayat events lined up by the town include competitions on the fastest bangus deboner, fastest person to tie crab pincers, fastest oyster shucker, among others.—Tita Roces
