THE Dagupan City government plans to build a Women’s Center or the Gender and Development (GAD) office that will be open to women 24 hours a day for counseling, education and referral purposes.

Mayor Belen Fernandez said the GAD office will complement the women and children’s desk of police stations to further ensure that their particular concerns are addressed.

“Although we already have the women and children desk in police stations, we should also have one in the city to prevent abuses being committed on women through proper education and protection,” Fernandez said during launching of the observance of Women’s Month.

Starting off the celebration was the delivery of free health services to the women employees and volunteers at the city hall.

Other activities included a parade with the Department of Education last March 7 and the Buntis Day on Monday, March 10.

The Buntis Day, in partnership with the Philippine Medical Society, will benefit some 500 indigent pregnant women who will be given free health services including prenatal check- up and ultrasound.

Philippine Health Insurance Incorporated (Philhealth) cards will also be distributed to the indigent pregnant women and the search for Mrs. Buntis will be the event’s highlight.—Dada Austria
