Red tide alert up in Pangasinan

By March 9, 2014Headlines, News

AN ALERT has been raised against consuming shellfish collected from the coastal waters of Bolinao and Anda towns as these areas have been found positive of red tide toxin.

The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) in Region 1 issued the advisory on March 6 based on the most recent samples gathered and tested.

BFAR Regional Director Nestor Domenden said the public is advised “not to eat shellfishes, shrimps and crabs gathered/harvested from the waters of Anda and Bolinao, Pangasinan until further notice.”

Domenden also reiterated that concerned local government units are advised to require market inspectors, quarantine officers, administrators to demand for auxiliary invoice or clearance for Domestic Fish Movement from transporters/dealers of fish and seashells that are unloaded from other provinces or municipalities to ensure that such sea products did not come from areas found positive of paralytic shellfish poisoning.

Other parts of the country that have recently been found positive of red tide are Dumanquillas Bay in Zamboanga del Sur and Bataan coastal waters (Mariveles, Limay, Orion, Pilar, Balanga, Orani, Abucay, and Samal).

DAGUPAN

In Dagupan, the main trading hub in the province, Mayor Belen Fernandez has alerted the City Agriculture Office (CAO)  to take appropriate measures in view of the red tide alert in Bolinao and Anda as some of the fishes and shellfishes being sold in the Dagupan Fish Market come from these two towns.

City Agriculturist Emma Molina clarified that fish, squid, shrimp and crabs remain safe to eat provided these are washed thoroughly and the internal organs such as gills and intestines are removed before cooking.—Tita Roces with report from LVM
