Province to build soil analysis lab
FOR AGRI DEVELOPMENT
LINGAYEN—Pangasinan, the third top rice producer in the country, will soon put up a laboratory for soil analysis to further improve the production of rice and other agricultural yields.
Provincial Agricultural Office Officer-in-Charge Dalisay Moya said the provincial government will build the laboratory at the Provincial Nursery in Sta. Barbara this year.
“With the soil analysis, we will know what is lacking or what is too much in the soil to aid us in improving production,” she said.
The lab will be funded by the P4-million cash incentive awarded to the province for being one of the top rice-producing provinces in 2013.
Pangasinan, currently rice sufficient with a surplus, produced more than one million metric tons last year in its about 180,000 hectares of rice fields.
Moya said local programs in support of the increased productivity of the rice sector include the provision of high quality palay seeds through the accelerated palay seed production and distribution, loan assistance in the rain-fed areas and those affected by calamities including soft loans for seeds and fertilizer, and the farmers field school that teaches farmers on latest agri-technologies.
The provincial government is also looking forward to the expansion of the province’s irrigation system, which presently only serves 50% of the production area.–Johanne R. Macob
