Pangasinan wins Agri-Pinoy Rice Achiever’s award anew

LINGAYENThe Department of Agriculture (DA) recently cited the province of Pangasinan again as an “Outstanding Rice Achiever Province in the Country” during the recent Agri-Pinoy Rice Achievers awarding rites held March 14 at the New Port Performing Arts Theater, Resorts World in Pasay City.

Acting Provincial Agriculturist Dalisay Moya received the award on behalf Governor Amado T. Espino, Jr., from DA Secretary Proceso Alcala and Undersecretary Dante de Lima in recognition of the province’s support and contribution to DA’s National Rice Program for 2013.

Espino was on official business in Cebu province from March 14-16 for the signing of a “Twinning Agreement” with the provincial government of Cebu.

Espino said DA’s Agri-Pinoy Rice Achiever’s award encourages LGUs, Irrigators’ Associations (IAs) and Agricultural Extension Workers (AEWs) to sustain awareness, support and commitment to the national government’s Rice Self-Sufficiency Program (RSSP).

Pangasinan received its first similar award last year.

The province also received P4-million as incentive prize intended for the construction and establishment of a Provincial Soils Laboratory at the Provincial Nursery in Sta. Barbara.

Other awardees were Ilocos Norte, Nueva Vizcaya, Isabela, Laguna, Bulacan, Nueva Ecija, North Cotabato, Kalinga, Bukidnon, Occidental Mindoro and Lanao del Norte.

The outstanding provinces were judged based on the following criteria: Rice Production (production increment over 2011, production performance over 2012 target, yield increment over 2011, and percentage of contribution to national/provincial production; percentage of IRA disbursed for rice program, amount of rice-related projects initiated/funded by the LGU and number of farmers benefitted, high quality seeds utilization, quality of road map including all elements/components present, notable accomplishments and awards and percentage of provincial personnel deployed for rice program.

Meanwhile, 10 agricultural personnel from the provincial government — Moya, Nestor P. Batalla, Rita A. Prieto, Irene T. Estrada, Margarita G. Nano, Teresita A. Naoe, Ronna P. Frianeza, Eleuterio S. Saoi Jr., Madelyn V. Valenzuela and Danilo Villamil — were also hailed as Outstanding AEWs.

DA Region 1 Executive Director Valentino Perdido, in a letter to Espino, lauded the contribution of the province to the positive growth of regional rice production, as he added that the award is big inspiration for the province to continue working hand-in-hand with the agency to realize agricultural development and advancement in Region 1.
