Pangasinan cyclists routed

VISITING cyclists recently dominated the two bike races in the province with Felipe Marcelo of Nueva Ecija topping the Bayambang open bikefest on March 16 and David Perez of Tarlac ruling the Alaminos City tiff on March 14.

The Llanera-native Marcelo, 24, who placed fifth overall in this year’s Ronda Pilipinas bikathon, outsprinted a group of five riders 250 meters to the finish line to pocket the P25,000 top prize with Ericson Obosa of Manaoag coming in a close half-bike behind to collect P20,000 while Tarlac City neophyte rider Ronillan Quita landing third for P15,000.

The three also received fibre glass trophies each from Bayambang Mayor Ricardo M. Camacho.

In fourth place worth P10,000 was Renier Clauna of Bugallon and Mangaldanon Joshua Carino in fifth earned P7,000. The five negotiated the 178-kilometer flat trek in identical four hours, 18 minutes and seven seconds.

Rounding up the top ten were: Dominic Perez of Sto. Tomas, Pangasinan; Baler Ravina of Asingan; Ronald Oranza of Villasis; Johnray Gabay of Laoac; and Chris Joven of Metro Manila. The fourth up to tenth placers each received a medal and corresponding cash prizes.

The 11th up to the 20th placers were given P1,500 each while all finishers brought home P1,000 each.

There were 70 contestants who were jointly flagged off by Camacho and Vice Mayor Mylvin Junio.

The bikefest was in conjunction with the town’s celebration of its 400th  founding anniversary.

ALAMINOS

In Alaminos City, Perez from Tarlac, outsprinted his teammate Romeo Camingao in the last half kilometer to win the First Jing Aquino Ronda Alaminos bikefest, his first after four tries in Pangasinan races this year.

The duo clocked the 105-kilometer rolling course in two hours, 38 minutes and 29 seconds.

Tito Benitez of Malasiqui came in a far third while Binmaley bikefest winner Oscar Espiritu of San Manuel, Pangasinan landed fourth and Benjie Nituan of Binalonan finished fifth.

The bikefest was flagged off by Mayor Arthur Celeste and Vice Mayor Earl James Aquino.–JAGJr.
