Farmers asked to follow cropping calendar
THE National Irrigation Administration-Pangasinan Irrigation Management Office (NIA-PIMO) urged farmers in the province to adhere to the set cropping calendar to assure sufficient irrigation to farmlands all year round.
Engr. Alfredo Morante of NIA-PIMO said farmers who do not follow the cropping calendar sometimes experience insufficient supply of water from the irrigation system.
“Minsan meron nang nag-aani, meron pang nagtatanim,” he explained.
Morante said his office met with agricultural officers and farmers groups to discuss the scheduled cropping calendar which is designed to synchronize the planting and harvest seasons.
NIA-PIMO manages communal irrigation systems (CIS) in the six legislative districts of Pangasinan and seven national irrigation systems (NIS) located in Sta. Barbara, San Manuel, San Fabian, Bugallon, Tayug, San Quintin, and Rosales.
Morante said 90% are now harvesting in areas supplied by the CIS, while for the NIS, about 50-70%.
He added that a feasibility study on the Mabini Agricultural Project that will irrigate more than 2,000 hectares is underway.– Johanne R. Macob
