LINGAYEN— In support of Bayambang bid for the longest barbecue grill in the Guinness Book of World Record, the provincial government has given the town 50,000 kilograms of tilapia (St. Peter’s fish) worth about P4 million.

Bayambang is aiming to set up an eight-kilometer barbecue grill during its Malangsi Fishtival on April 4, coinciding with the town’s quadri-centennial celebration to break the existing world record set by India at 6.2 kilometers.

“The goal is not only to put Bayambang in the world map but to further show what the province can offer,” said Mayor Ricardo Camacho.

There will be 8,000 grill pads, each at one meter long, that will be used for simultaneous grilling of 40 tons of freshwater fish like, aside from tilapia, dalag, gourami, and hito using 4,000 sacks of charcoal.

The grill pads will be placed from Barangay Nalsian Norte near the boundary in Bayambang and Malasiqui town and in Barangay Wawa near the boundary in Camiling, Tarlac.

The town’s 77 barangays will handle10 grills each, and the rest will be open for sale to individuals and groups.

A grand street party with about 20 bands performing will be held after the grilling.

Bayambang has a population of about 116,000.

The provincial government’s contribution to the event was provided under provincial board Resolution No. 488-2014, jointly authored by 3rd District Board Members Angel Baniqued Jr and Generoso Tulagan Jr.

“The noble endeavor of Bayambang, if realized, will boost the tourism industry not only of the province but of the whole country,” Baniqued said.

Other places in Pangasinan that have gone in the Guinness list for longest grill are Dagupan City in May 2003 using bangus, and Sto. Tomas in February 2008 using corn.

Bayambang was founded as a town by the Spaniards in April 4, 1614 and was declared by General Emilio Aguinaldo as the seat of the short-lived Philippine Republic in 1899.
