URDANETA CITY—The opening last week of Xentromart Bagsakan (XB), a privately-owned trading center for agricultural produce, is expected not only to boost this city’s economy further but help improve the daily flow of vehicular and pedestrian traffic in the commercial center area.

Occupying the former cattle auction area along Consejo Street in Barangay Poblacion, the 2.9-hectare trading center provides an alternative route for vehicles and serves as an alternative to vendors occupying the sidewalks along Aruego Street, Perez Extension, La Chica and Catlle Street.

“For the city, the XB site also provides a an alternate route to vehicles proceeding to Dagupan from the south,” XB General Manager Manuel Roy said during the inauguration last January 28,  as he recalled Mayor Amadeo G. E. Perez IV’s dilemma in managing the growing volume of vehicular and pedestrian traffic in the city.

Urdaneta is a convergence point not only for Pangasinan traders but also those from other parts of Luzon including Isabela, Nueva Vizcaya, Quirino, Nueva Ecija, Tarlac, Pampanga, Bulacan, Mindoro, Quezon Province, Benguet.

The mayor acknowledged the vital contribution of the XB to the development of the city.

WASTE MATERIALS

Roy pointed out that XB’s operations will help ensure environmental protection with facilities in place for proper disposal of wastes in the center.

The company acquired a threading machine to convert most of the waste materials to be generated into fertilizer.

The agri-trading hub currently has five two-storey building with 144 stalls for rent to traders of fruits, vegetables, meat, poultry and other commodities.

Engr. Wilfredo Decena, XB president, said that seven more trade facilities in the area including a cold storage and a warehouse to increase the shelf life of fresh produce will soon be built. —Johanne R. Macob
