Traffic experiment gains public support
THE traffic experiment initiated by the Dagupan City government effective February 17 has so far shown positive results in decongesting the downtown area.
Commuters, business owners and jeepney drivers said they find the traffic system on trial more convenient and beneficial to them.
Part of the experiment is the designation of 15 loading and unloading stations for the different jeepney routes, including those coming from outside the city.
The experiment will run for one week, after which Mayor Belen Fernandez will again meet with the jeepney drivers and operators to evaluate the results before finally deciding if the city’s traffic ordinance will eventually be amended to incorporate the new traffic scheme.
On the first and second days of the dry run, many commuters, business establishments and jeepney drivers expressed satisfaction upon seeing the smoother flow of vehicles along the city’s major streets, A.B. Fernandez Avenue and Perez Boulevard.
Senior citizen Jovita Vinluan from San Carlos City said the new traffic scheme appeared safer for commuters as jeepney drivers no longer compete for passengers recklessly.
Under the new traffic scheme, jeepneys are allowed stop and load and unload passengers for only 30 seconds.
Students waiting for their ride at Station 10 located in front of University of Luzon on Perez Blvd. noticed a more organized loading and unloading of passengers.
Personnel of the Public Order and Safety Office and members of Task Force Colorum are deployed in every station to guide passengers and apprehend violators.
Jeepney driver Bernardo Gatchalian lauded the mayor’s initiative in solving the city’s traffic problem. —With report from CIO.
