PHL organ donors aim for Guinness record

CALLING on Pangasinenses who want to be counted among the Philippine’s registered organ donors.

The Philippines is gunning for the Guinness Book of World Records for the category of having the most people to sign up as organ donor.

In a forum held last February 12 at the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) Region 1 Office here, Dr. Antonio Paraiso, program manager of Department of Health- Philippine Network for Organ Sharing (DOH-PhilNOS), in charge of the Guinness campaign, said it will be the first try of the country for such record.

DOH-PhilNOS with the PIA will conduct the “Most People to Sign Up as Organ Donor Registrants” with the brand campaign “I’m a Lifeline” on February 28 in different sites nationwide, the closest in Pangasinan being at the Ilocos Training Regional Medical Center in San Fernando City, La Union.

The actual conduct of the Guinness attempt aims to break the record for the one-hour and eight-hour, single site and set the record for one-hour and eight-hour, multiple sites registration.

The present record in one-hour, single site is 2,755 held by the Prakash Gurjar and Madadgar Parivar in Almedabad India on September 17, 2013 while the record in eight-hour, single site is 10,450 by the Indian National Students Organization, India on December 1, 2013

The PIA said the project also aims to increase public awareness on organ donation, mobilizing institution and government agencies in the campaign for organ donation, and creating a national registry of potential organ donors.

Paraiso noted that in the case of kidney patients alone, there are about 12,000 each year but transplant rate is at an average of only 3%.–Johanne R. Macob
