Phivolcs holds REDAS training in Dagupan
PREPARING FOR EARTHQUAKES
A SIX-DAY training on the use of the Rapid Earthquake Damage Assessment System (REDAS) software will be conducted by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) for Dagupan City officials and volunteers starting today February 9 at the CSI Stadia in Dagupan.
The training was initiated by Mayor Belen Fernandez to equip front line officials and concerned citizens of Dagupan City with a training to save lives and properties in case a strong earthquake hits and triggers a tsunami.
Attending the training are department heads and employees of the City Planning and Development Office, City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, Public Assistance and Response Management Center, and the Barangay Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council including members of the Kapisanan ng mga Broadkaster ng Pilipinas -Pangasinan Chapter.
REDAS is a software developed by Philvolcs in 2002 now being shared by the agency to Local Government Units (LGUs) as a tool to mainstream disaster risk reduction into the local development process.
The main feature of REDAS is its capability to simulate earthquake hazard scenarios for any given earthquake intensity level.
Phivolcs will provide the REDAS software to the city at no cost and each training participant will be required to sign a corresponding end-user license agreement for each REDAS copy installed at individual computers.
Facilitators and speaker from Phivolcs will be headed by Dr. Bartolome Bautista.
The training was planned last year by Fernandez with Dr. Leonila Bautista, a research specialist of Phivolcs.
