Colorum tricycles purged out of Dagupan streets
IN a bid to further decongest the streets of Dagupan, the local government is finally weeding out all colorum tricycles plying the city.
Mayor Belen Fernandez recently issued an executive order creating Anti-Colorum Task Force (ACTF) and named retired SPO4 Carlito Ocampo as its head to effect the crackdown against tricycles plying the streets without a franchise.
The crackdown versus colorum tricycle is pursuant to Section 11 of Article 6 of Ordinance No. 1748 that authorized the issuance of only 2,500 franchises for motorized tricycles in the city.
Noting that there are too many tricycles in the city, Ocampo advised owners of colorum tricycles not to use their units in ferrying paying passengers.
“There are only 2,500 units authorized to operate in Dagupan,” Ocampo told newsmen.
Tricycles with franchises are given stickers indicating that they are authorized to serve as public transport.
TRAFFIC EXPERIMENT
The crackdown versus colorum tricycles was started just as the city government began a traffic experiment using 15 designated loading and unloading stations for jeepneys set in various parts of the downtown area.
During the first two days of the operation against colorum tricycles, the task force did not make any apprehension but merely warned drivers of the illegal vehicles to desist or face apprehension.
In the weeks ahead, the owners of colorum tricycles will be issued citation tickets while their units will be impounded after the third offense and will only be released after the owners have paid the fines. (with report from CIO)
