BONUAN Boquig’s Bahay Kubo garden has been chosen as Dagupan City’s official entry in the regional search for Agri Pinoy Gulayan sa Paaralan.

The announcement was made after Mayor Belen Fernandez, along with Assistant Schools Division Superintendent Lourdes Servito of the Department of Education-Dagupan and some education supervisors, visited the school last February 12.

Fernandez was fascinated to see in one garden all the vegetables identified in the folksong  Bahay Kubo, including several other vegetable varieties.

The school also has a livestock area where native chicken, white leg horn broiler  chicken, native pigs, ducks, and geese are being raised.

The school has also adopted aquaponics and hydroponics gardening aside from backyard gardening.

Aquaponics is the technique of raising together fish and plants in water without soil in one integrated system while hydroponics gardening is a method of growing plants using mineral nutrient solutions in water, also without soil.

Manuel Ferrer, school principal, said the success of the school’s gulayan comes from volunteerism and cooperation among the school, barangay council, members of 4Ps (Pantazwid Pampamilya Pilipino Program) and the Parents-Teachers Association. (CIO/ Leziel C. Aquino)
