Batang Pinoy Nat’l Finals: Team P’sinan harvests 24 medals

LINGAYEN—Pangasinan’s athletes harvested four gold, 10 silver and 10 bronze medals as of the penultimate day of the Batang Pinoy National Finals in Bacolod City, and was in 6th place as of Friday morning in the overall standing out of 139 local government units entered in the meet.

Pangasinan fielded 92 athletes in the meet that started January 27 and closed on February 1

Two gold medals were collected Thursday by John Enrico Vazquez of the Mother Goose Special School System in Taekwondo and by Emmanuel de los Santos of the Pangasinan National High School in cycling who ignited a 1-2 Pangasinan finish in the event.

Pangasinan’s first two gold were snatched Wednesday by Mariz Sabado of the Umingan National High School in the 2,000-meter walk for women and Marvin Manuel of the Virgin Milagrosa University Foundation in the 1,500-run for men.

The 10 silver medals of Pangasinan were in athletics with five, taekwondo with four, and cycling, one.

The silver medalists in athletics were Lodivico de la Cruz of Umingan NHS, both in the 110 meter hurdles and 400 meter low hurdles; Kim Xyrox Macaranas, also of Umingan NHS in the 2,000 meter walk for women;   Rolando Banderlipe, also of Umingan NHS, in 2,000 meter walk for men; and Roland Osia of Anda National High School in triple jump for men.

The four silver medals in Taekwondo were won by John Matthew Manantan of Escuela Sra. de La Salette of Dagupan; Narayana Das Mesina of Mother Goose Special  School System. Gilbert Jorel Arellano of the Daniel Maramba NHS in Sta. Barbara  and Team Pangasinan in Kata competition.

The lone silver in cycling was produced by Malone C. Canlas Jr. of the Binmaley Catholic School, teammate of the event’s eventual winner De Los Santos.

The bronze medalists for Pangasinan were Roderick Osia of Anda NHS in the long jump for men, Carl Angelo Cunanan of the Umingan NHS in the 2,000-meter walk for men, Cipriano Suniga of the Cipriano Primicias NHS in Alcala in triple long jump for women; Marvin Manuel of VMUF in the 800-meter run for men; and in the 4×400 meter relay by Lodovico de la Cruz of Umingan NHS, Marvin Manuel of VMUF, Francis Marron and Kevin Melendez of Umingan  NHS.

The other bronze medals are in cycling by Rayven Scott Evans of the St. Antony Abbot Academy of Villasis, and the Pangasinan cycling team in the dirt bike.

The bronze medal winners in taekwondo are Aldrin Brito of Mother Goose Special School System. Alexis Louise Nunez of Divine World Academy of Dagupan and John Marc Claveria of Escuela Sr. De la Sallette.

In the three-on-three basketball, the Pangasinan men’s team scored two straight victories in the elimination round against Naga City and Iloilo City, 10-7 and 19-13, before it was stopped by Zamboanga City, 14-15.

In the women’s competition, Pangasinan already won twice in three-on-three basketball by beating Sta. Rosa City and Bataan, 14-13 and 14-7, respectively.

In volleyball, Pangasinan disposed of Bataan, Davao del Norte and Cebu while the duo of Dennis Pica and Christopher Magno prevailed in their first round lawn tennis double match  with a pair from Negros Occidental, 6-1 and 6-0.  (LVM)
