5 basketball players to train in US

LINGAYEN—After emerging as champions in the recently concluded Batang Pinoy National Games, some of the members of the Pangasinan basketball boys and girls teams have been granted the opportunity to undergo a weeklong training in Washington DC, USA.

The five players, according to coaches Exequiel Sespeñe (boys) and Nicholets Ramos (girls), along with fellow players from other parts of the country will start with the training on March 11.

The Pangasinan athletes are: cousins Valerie Mae J. Mamaril and Trixie J. Mamaril, 14 and 15 years old, respectively, and 16 year-old Princess No Or M. Sison, all studying at the Pangasinan National High School in Lingayen under the tutelage of Nicolets J. Ramos, and 15-yearsold Mark Lester A. Castillo and Loms Vincent M. Mariñas of PNHS and Binmaley Catholic School, respectively, in the boys category.

The Philippine delegation is composed of eight boys, eight girls and the two coaches. The 16 athletes were chosen from among 28 athletes from the top seven teams in the Batang Pinoy finals.

All of their expenses will be paid for by the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC), which made the request for the training through Commissioner Jose Luis “Jolly” Gomez.

The program is under the U.S. Department’s of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) and the U.S. Embassy to Philippines which will fund the trip.–Johanne R. Macob and JAGJr.
