MEASLES ADVISORY

LINGAYEN—Pangasinenses have been advised by the Provincial Health Office (PHO) to avoid crowded places like malls amid concerns of a potential measles surge after two more confirmed cases were reported since the start of the year.

Dr. Anna Ma. Teresa de Guzman, PHO chief, said their latest data included one confirmed measles case each in Bolinao town and San Carlos City and they also gathered reports last week that some employees in a mall were afflicted with measles.

There were 26 reported cases last year from only two in 2012. Of the 26, Rosales town recorded 12 while the towns of Mabini, Lingayen and San Nicolas have three each, two in San Quintin, Alaminos, Natividad and Mangatarem one each.

De Guzman pointed out that Rosales is close to Tarlac which has already reported measles cases.

She urged the local governments to immediately send out their workers to conduct vaccination.

“They should bring their services to the barrios and sitios, especially in the far-flung areas,” she said.

De Guzman noted that most affected are those aged from one to four years old although there are suspected cases with ages ranging from three months to five months.

She said district health nurses have been directed to make suspected cases undergo blood testing for laboratory confirmation.

MONITORING IN SCHOOLS

The Department of Education (DepEd) in Dagupan City, meanwhile, has started to monitor the situation using the Preventive Alert System in School (PASS) to identify students who may potentially be afflicted with measles.

Renata Rovillos, principal of West Central Elementary School (WCES), said school heads have been instructed to maintain records of daily health inspection of pupils, students and teachers as directed by the DepEd.

To aid the afflicted students, teachers are required to help them buy providing lessons for home study. –Tita Roces with report from PIA1-Pangasinan/EBS
