Plans afoot to set up MRFs in city’s barangays

WITH the worsening garbage disposal problem in Dagupan, Mayor Belen Fernandez is set to establish a Material Recovery Facility (MRF) for recyclable materials in the city’s 31 barangays.

The mayor said she withheld the release of a P100,000 financial aid from the city government for each barangay last year because she reserved the amount for setting up MRFs this year.

This amount will be doubled with another P100,000 allocated for each of the barangays under this year’s budget.

Noting the garbage piling up in some barangays, particularly in Tapuac, Fernandez is optimistic that MRFs will significantly reduce the volume of garbage being disposed at the already overflowing dump site in Bonuan.

The landowner of a plot adjacent to the dumpsite is already reportedly preparing to file a damage suit against the city government for allegedly encroaching on the private property in expanding the dumpsite.

Fernandez earlier led city officials in a Study Tour in Pulilan, Bulacan where they visited the town’s MRF which she wants to adopt as a model for Dagupan.

The mayor recently formed Task Force on Material Recovery headed by Allan Dale Zarate and Rosemary Teng Mejia to oversee the strict implementation of segregation, reuse and recycling at the household level in the barangays.

MRF is a facility required by Republic Act 9003 or the Ecological and Solid Waste Management act.

The task force is set to conduct information and education campaigns on segregation of wastes.
