LINGAYEN—Illegal recruiters are now taking advantage of popular social media site Facebook to lure those seeking work overseas.

Alex Ferrer, chief of the Provincial Employment Services Office (PESO), issued the warning after several alert jobseekers trooped to his office to report the new modus operandi of suspected  illgeal recuriters.

“They came to our office last week to validate with us if the agency is registered since it is already asking for a certain amount of money,” Ferrer said.

The aspiring Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) were reportedly contacted by the unnamed agency through social media and were asked to pay P4,000 as payment for a coaching seminar they were supposedly required to attend as the first part of enlistment.

“Registered recruitment agencies have to secure an authority from Philippine Overseas Employment Agency (POEA) or with the PESO in the locality before they could conduct activities such seminars in their offices or in the social media,” Ferrer said.

He said PESO will act to stop the illegal recruiter from promoting its activities via social media.

Ferrer called on those seeking work opportunities to register at the PESO so they can be directly notified of scheduled job fairs.—Dada Austria
