Dagupan River Cruise back soon

NEW boats for the Dagupan River Cruise will soon be plying the waters of Dawel.

This was announced by Mayor Belen Fernandez during the KBP forum last Thursday and added that the construction of three boats for the project will be funded by donations to the city government she solicited from the private sector.

The River Cruise has since been suspended when the three original boats for the project funded by the city government, were pulled out by employees of the Magic establishment owned by former Mayor Benjamin Lim a few weeks after he lost in his re-election bid in the May 2013 election.

Former tourism officer Rose Mary Teng-Mejia earlier confirmed that the boats were owned by Lim.  City hall records, however, show that the boats were maintained by the city government.

The landing berths for the cruise project, constructed at a cost of P11 million using city funds, continue to be maintained by the city government in preparation for the revival of the project.

Fernandez said she expects the new boats to be operational before the Dagupan Bangus Festival in April this year.

She acknowledged that the Dagupan River Cruise was a good project by her predecessor, whose health condition remain undisclosed by his family after he reportedly suffered a stroke a day before the May 13 election.

She lamented that the former mayor’s employees destroyed a good legacy when they towed away the boats without clearance from the city government.

“If Mayor Lim is already well, I am sure he would be sad to learn that the boats were taken away by his men, putting to naught his legacy to the people of Dagupan,” Fernandez said.—LVM
