BINMALEY—Physically and mentally strong at 97, this town’s oldest citizen is confident that he will reach the 100-year old mark.

Amadeo Ventenilla, who celebrated his birthday last Monday, wowed local officials and townsfolk here when he attended the weekly municipal flag raising ceremony for his “annual courtesy call” without the aid of a cane or a caregiver.

His secret to longevity?

Being “a very good boy”, said the former soldier with a smile, explaining that he follows a healthy, stress-free lifestyle, indulges in no vice nor extramarital affair, and constantly prays.

His regular diet consists of vegetables, fish and fruits, maintaining low salt in his dishes and shuns meat to avoid hypertension.

He also regularly drinks milk, takes vitamins and goes walking for his exercise.

Ventenilla proudly said he has three children, two of them are twins, several grandchildren and great grandchildren whom he admits to have lost count.

He said when he was in the battlefield during the Second World War where he witnessed the Fall of Bataan, his wife  Fresca had a theme song for him, which he gamely sang to the delight of local newsmen: I pray for you while you are away each night and day, I pray for you till troubles cease, till you and I will be in peace. I pray for you till you come home so we will be very sweet and sweet.Tita Roces
