Belen settles Pugaro’s 10-year old land dispute
ALL’s well that ends well between a land owner and some 50 informal settlers in Sitio Suit, Barangay Pugaro after Dagupan Mayor Belen Fernandez interceded last Friday in their decade-old dispute that already led to the filing of counter-court suits.
The informal settlers who settled in a private property were assured that their shanties will not be demolished and they are being given a chance to move to a new 7,000 square meter area where they can have at least 75 square meters each for free.
Fernandez was asked to intercede in the dispute between landowner Manuel Pablico and the informal settlers who built their shanties in his property several years ago.
In a bid to get back their property, the Pablico family first offered a resettlement area of 7,000 square meters to the settlers.
The settlers, however, did not accept the offer and the Pablicos eventually withdrew it.
Fernandez convinced the Pablicos to restate the offer while she moderated a peaceful dialogue between the two parties.
The informal settlers said they do not want to just leave the place where they have built their shanties unless there is a guarantee that they will be able to claim ownership at the resettlement site.
Fernandez gave assurance that the city government will assist the settlers until they obtain titles under their name to the lot that they will be moving to since the parties agreed that the Pablicos will donate the 7,000 square meter lot to the city government, which in turn will subdivide it so that each informal settler can have least a 75-square meters to occupy.
This is the second land dispute successfully moderated by the Fernandez administratIon in Barangay Pugaro.
The first involved the Soriano family who agreed to give part of their land in eastern Pugaro for amortization on easy term to the settlers who have occupied their land for over 20 years.
