LINGAYEN–Some 300 participants from various parts of the country will join the first Governor Amado T. Espino, Jr. Karate Championship on January 11 at the Narciso Ramos Sports and Civic Center (NRSCC) gym here.

This became apparent after several meetings were held between the host province represented by Provincial Sports Coordinator Modesto Operana and the Philippine Karatedo Federation headed by Dr. Alejandro Enrico G. Vasquez, national president and also the head coach of the Pangasinan Karate Team.

Seven contingents from Southern Luzon, National Capital Region (NCR), Nueva Ecija, Isabela, Angeles City, Cagayan de Oro and Mandaue City plus the Pangasinan Team are expected to chop and kick each other in a one-day national invitational karate championship.

Vasquez said there are at least 176 medals including three major trophies that are up for grabs.

He expressed optimism that the Pangasinan Karate Team, which lists 20 members, five of whom are already members of the Philippine Karate Team, will give its best to win most of the medals.

Last year, the Pangasinan Karate Team emerged as over-all champion during the 2nd Philippine Karatedo Federation NSA Inc. Gov. JonVic Remulla Karate Championships held in Cavite.

Southeast Asian (SEA) medalists Mae Soriano, brothers Mark Andrew and John Matthew Manantan, John Enrico Vasquez, Jurille Gilbert Arellano and Philippine medalist KC Santiago will be present during the championships, he added.

“This invitational championship will encourage the youth to join karatedo, and it will further strengthen the Pangasinan Karate Team,” Vasquez said.

Operana said this upcoming sports event would be an opportunity for the Batang Pinoy karatedo champions to learn additional skills and techniques from their colleagues.

Karatedo, which means a “way of karate”, is a form of self-defense and its ultimate aim is to promote the total development of a person through discipline, perseverance, humility, honor, prudence and fortitude. (PIO/Merly R. Tibalao)
