3 killed as dump trucks hit garong

MABINI– Three people died on the spot as three dump trucks and one three-wheeled vehicle locally known as garong collided with one another along the National Highway of Barangay Tagudin here at about 12:30 a.m. of January 22.

According to the report submitted by Police Senior Inspector Elpidio Cruz, the three dump trucks, following one another closely, were traversing the highway at a fast speed when the first truck hit the garong loaded with eight passengers, also heading in the same direction, causing the two other trucks behind to slam into each other.

The trucks were on their way to a quarrying site in Barangay De Guzman, also in this town, while the garong passengers were on their way home in Barangay Tagudin.

The three trucks owned by Christian Ian Construction Corporation (CICC) from Barangay Soledad, Sta. Rosa, Nueva Ecija.

Cruz said the drivers of trucks 1 and 2 suffered no injuries while truck 3 driver suffered slight injuries. They were brought to the Mabini Police Station for investigation.

The garong was driven by Ric Erum, 40, resident of Barangay Tagudin..

The three passengers who were declared dead on arrival at the Western Pangasinan District Hospital in Alaminos City were Eunice Erum, Tawatao, and Ballares, while the other five passengers are still undergoing treatment for serious physical injuries at the Region I Medical Center.

Meanwhile, P/Sr Supt. Sterling Raymund Blanco, Police Provincial Office O-I-C, said in an interview that the area where the accident happened has enough road signs and most vehicular accidents were mainly caused by reckless driving.
