Rep. Gina De V seeks establishment of ministry of women
FOURTH District Rep. Gina de Venecia has called for the establishment of a ministry or department for women in all Asian countries when she addressed the 6th Asian Parliamentary Assembly (APA) held in Islamabad, Pakistan last week.
These ministries or departments for women, she said, would be mandated to promote gender equality and the empowerment of women at the national and local levels and focus on women’s special concerns in politics and development.
She said that women possess “a gentler nature and a quantum of compassion greater than men” while asserting that party organizations in Asia will benefit from more women politicians in directing campaigns against mass poverty and social injustice as well as causes such as inclusive economic growth, primary health care particularly of child-bearing women and of infants, and basic education and employment.
De Venecia, head of the Association of Women Legislators in the House of Representatives, observed that many women leaders have taken positions of honor in Asia, the Middle East and the Arab world, Australia and New Zealand and the small island-states in the Pacific.
“But if we really want a quantum leap in the status of women in Asia, we must ask our respective governments to create a Ministry or Department for Women in our respective countries”, she said.
