Power comes to IPs area in Aguilar
AGUILAR—The community of Indigenous Peoples (IPs) in Sitio Mapita, Barangay Laoag here gave a cheer as they welcomed the coming, finally, of electricity in their remote area.
“This is the best Christmas gift we ever received,” said Gregorio Litaoen, one of the community leaders.
Some 800 people live in Mapita, mostly from the tribes of Ibaloi, Kankana-ey, and Bago, originally from the Cordilleras.
Second District Rep. Leopoldo Bataoil, who pushed for the electrification project and was present during the ceremonial lighting on December 23, said the power supply is expected to “perk up development” in the IP community.
Four elders and their families moved to Aguilar in the 1960s following tribal conflicts and have since made this place their home, bringing with them their traditional livelihood of farming.
The group’s chief, Rodolfo Mallari, said with electricity, they can boost and expand their economic activities as well as help the children in their studies.
“Ito pong ibinigay nilang kuryente ay nagsisilbing liwanag sa aming buhay,” said Mallari.
The community produces high-quality fruits and vegetables such as tomatoes, papaya and beans, some of which are sold to a premier food corporation.
The P12.5-million project, undertaken through the National Electrification Administration, was in line with the national government’s Sitio Electrification Program.
Engr. Rodrigo Corpuz, general manager of the Central Pangasinan Electric Cooperative, Inc., said coordination with the municipal government is ongoing for the setting up of house wiring to provide electric supply in every home in the sitio.– Johanne R. Macob
