Nat’l Masters, protégés converge in Pangasinan

5TH GATE, JR. CUP OPEN CHESS TOURNEY

LINGAYEN— National Master Roel Abelgas from Manila emerged as champion in the open category, besting nearly 300 wood pushers from various parts of the country at the 5th Gov. Amado T. Espino, Jr. Cup Open Chess Tournament held December 21 to 22.

Boholanon Oliver Dimakiling, an international master, grabbed 2nd place while IMs Joel Pimentel was 3rd in the tournakent participated in by some of the country’s top masters.

The competition had two categories: the Open Tournament for adults and the Kiddie Category for players 14 years old and under.

Pangasinenses also landed in the 7th to 15th slots, including Prince Mark Aquino of San Nicolas town and NM Narquingden Reyes of Bugallon.

In the kiddie category, Stephen Rome Pangilinan of Manila was number one, followed by Daryl Unix Samantilla also of Manila in 2nd and Fernando Mendoza of Dagupan City was 3rd.

Pangasinan’s Brylle Gever Vinluan was in 5th place.

Category prizes were also awarded to Prince Mark Aquino of San Nicolas, NM Narquingden Reyes of Bugallon and FM Haridas Pascua of Mangatarem for winning 1st, 2nd and 3rd place respectively as top local players.

Jedara Docena, Virginia Ruaya and Cherry Anne Mejia of San Jacinto were the Top 3 female players.

The top 3 senior players include Leodegario Ricana (Valenzuela), Wesley Bustillos (Alaminos) and Isagani Fernandez (Dagupan City).

CHESS CLINIC

The governor expressed elation that chess is now a thriving board game in the province as he acknowledged the encouragement of parents for their children to become part of the sports development program of the provincial government.

As this developed, Espino announced that chess clinics will be held regularly during the summer months of April and May for the youth and other enthusiasts.

“The series of chess clinics to be spearheaded by the province through the Pangasinan Chess League signals the start of the chess academy in Pangasinan,” Espino said. (PIO/Angeline D. Villanueva)
