CALASIAO–The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) has extended livelihood assistance to at some 25 families from different barangays here with children who are at risk as child laborers.

The support comes from the Kabuhayan para sa Magulang ng Batang Manggagawa or KASAMA project, that provides economic activities to parents of child laborers so they can support the needs of their children, according to Grace Ursua, director of DOLE Ilocos.

“It helps to eliminate or lessen child labor incidences by providing parents or guardians of child laborers or children at risk, access to livelihood opportunities,” Ursua said.

A total P125,000 capital assistance was distributed by DOLE while the local government of Calasiao gave P33,000 for the training costs.

The beneficiaries will undergo skills and project management training and will attend a seminar on children’s rights and child labor.

One of the beneficiaries, Carmelita Magno, a mother of 11, was given P5,000 worth of sari-sari store package during the awarding ceremony held recently at the municipal hall here.

“Hinding hindi ko po makakalimutan ang araw na ito na tinulungan niyo kaming magkaroon ng disenteng kabuhayan,” said a teary-eyed Magno as she received her package.

Ursua told Magno, “The assistance given to you is coupled with responsibility to ensure that your children will not suffer hazardous work and instead, attend school and grow normally, which is among their basic rights.” (PIA1-Pangasinan/AMM)
