A gentle Christmas

CHRISTMAS has taken on a fresh meaning this year with the tragedy that was Yolanda. The gravity of the losses suffered by the victims forces us to re-assess the sense of the season and what values we should hold dear.

We remember that Christmas is not a holiday to celebrate in the shopping malls but in churches, not an occasion for commercial celebration with gift-giving but for spiritual thanksgiving because it is the birthday of Jesus who came to save us from eternal damnation.

We remember that it is a time for family – about the pure joy of togetherness and sharing, not excessiveness – and we look to the example of the Holy Family that spent that gentle night in a manger.

As the relief and rehabilitation efforts continue in the Visayas, let’s say a special Pangasinan prayer on Christmas eve for those who will be missing loved ones, their homes, and perhaps even a simple noche buena this year. Let’s also whisper a prayer for those who are providing the help there, many of them perhaps on the brink of a burn out.

A merry, moderate, and meaningful Christmas to everyone from your Sunday PUNCH family.

Fast learner Pacquiao

MANNY Pacquiao is a fast learner.  By paying President Aquino a courtesy call this week, he proved he has become wiser to the ways of the world.

Did Aquino not scold Pacquiao somewhat when the President said, “Pacquiao should talk to the BIR (Bureau of Internal Revenue) instead of raising his tax woes to the media.”  The rebuke was an offshoot of Pacquiao’s press conference that saw the boxer-congressman cry of political harassment when tax chief Kim Henares said Pacquiao owes the government P2.2 billion in unpaid taxes for 2008-2009.  Pacquiao going to Malacanang means more than bowing to authority and a sterling show of humility.  Pacquiao said he and the President didn’t talk about the PacMan’s alleged unpaid taxes during the one-hour meeting at the Palace. But the people know better.

You can fool some of the people all the time but not all the people all the time.
