Bayambang aims for Guinness record
LONGEST BARBECUE
BAYAMBANG- When this town celebrates its 400th founding anniversary next year, it will aim to land in the Guinness World Records (GWR) for organizing the longest barbecue by lining up an eight-kilometer grill of freshwater fish on April 5.
Preparations have already started, according to Mayor Ricardo Camacho, for the 8,000 grill pads at one meter long each that will be used for the simultaneous grilling of 40 tons of fish like dalag, gourami, tilapia, and hito using 4,000 sacks of charcoal.
“This is the single biggest affair that would be held here and this is very challenging,” said Camacho as he expressed confidence that community support will make it possible.
Each of the 77 barangays will host 10 grills each while remaining grills will be offered corporate sponsors and residents.
Each grill package with fish, charcoal and other materials needed would cost P1,500.
The grill pads will be positioned from Barangay Nalsian Norte near the boundary with Malasiqui town and in Barangay Wawa near the boundary with Camiling, Tarlac.
Camacho said about P21-million will be spent in the month-long quadricentennial celebration, to be sourced from sponsors and local government funds.
More than 500,000 participants from the town and neighboring areas are expected to join and witness the event.
After the grilling, there will be a grand street party featuring about 20 bands to provide entertainment.
Other towns in Pangasinan that have previously held the GWR longest barbecue record were Sto. Tomas with its corn grill and Dagupan City with its bangus grill.
The current GWR title holder for longest barbecue is Turkey with 6.1 kilometers.—Eva Visperas
