Tayug sets 1st Layug Marathon
FOR VICTIMS OF ‘YOLANDA’
TAYUG is holding a charity run dubbed “1st Layug Marathon” on December 21 at the Tayug People’s Park for the benefit of the victims of Typhoon Yolanda in the Visayas.
Businessman Rogelio Co, Jr., chairman of the race, said the event will jumpstart the town’s series of running activities “for a cause” so that local health and fitness enthusiasts can take an active part in both the sports and social agenda of the local government.
“We are fortunate enough to have been spared by this calamity so it is just fitting and proper that we also do our share to help and support our brothers in the Visayas region,” said Mayor Tyrone Agabas in an interview with The PUNCH.
The event, to be held in partnership with the local government of Tayug, was initiated by Team Kabsat Runners, a group of running and health and fitness enthusiasts in Tayug headed by sportsman and rescue volunteer Noel Cabobos.
Alain Lu, one of the founding members of Team Kabsat Runners and co-chairman of the event, said the organizing group initially decided to hold the race to benefit the underprivileged sectors of the Tayug community through feeding programs and medical missions aside from conducting free running clinics to new runners.
“But seeing the need that it is more important at this point that we contribute something to those who had been affected by the typhoon, it is incumbent for all of us to think more about them and do something to help ease their current dilemma,” Lu said.
The marathon, open to everyone, will have 3.5K, 7K, and 15K races.
Co also announced that all the participants are encouraged to bring used clothes, canned goods and other relief goods that can be sent to the victims.
