SAN CARLOS CITY—Barangay Palaming here elected last October 28 the youngest barangay chairman in the province – 18-year old Kevin George Calugay.

The young kapitan, Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) chairman of his barangay and secretary of the city SK federation until his recent election, admitted that it will be a tough job considering he is still a third year Medical Technology students at the St. Louis University in Baguio City.

Calugay received more than 600 votes with a margin of more than 300 votes over his closest rival, incumbent chairman Arthur Magalong, who was running for a third term.

“I know this would be difficult but I will strive to do my best,” Calugay said in a phone interview with The PUNCH.

He said he will delegate some the tasks to the seven barangay kagawads based on the committees he would assign them.

Only two aligned with Calugay won as kagawad but he said everyone has vowed to cooperate with him for the sake of their barangay.

DAD AS SUB

Further, he said his father, Dr. George Calugay, who inspired him to do public service, will also attend to his constituents’ needs in his absence.

The elder Calugay did not run in the election as he is still in government service.

During the campaign period, soon-to-be Kapitan Calugay said he was candid and the community was aware that that if he gets elected, his dad will play a role in addressing the community’s needs.

He added that with modern technology, he will have no problem staying in constant touch with the barangay even as he promised to be home to physically oversee and manage the barangay’s affairs every weekend.

It was the people, he said, who urged him to run having seen him deliver as a community leader despite his age.

“I may still be young but I’m already mature in dealing with situations and I will serve them with all my heart,” Calugay said.—Eva Visperas
