Responsible mining in Pangasinan stressed
LINGAYEN—There is a standing invitation for investors to evaluate the potential of the province’s mineral resources.
The invitation was extended by Gov. Amado T. Espino Jr. during a forum on responsible mining policies conducted by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources–Mines and Geosciences Bureau (DENR-MGB) on October 30 at the Capitol Resort Hotel here.
Executive Assistant IV Ramon Morden who represented Governor Amado Espino Jr. said “the present administration wants investors to take a closer look at what mineral resources are found under our mountains, extract these resources and share the wealth with our people.”
In extending the invitation, however, Morden stressed that the extraction of mineral resources in the province, however, must be balanced with care to the province’s fragile environment — in cognizance with the provincial government’s aggressive environmental protection programs and advocacies.
The forum was attended by some 50 members and representatives of the Pangasinan Provincial Mining Regulatory Board (PMRB) joined their colleagues in the rest of Region 1.
DENR-MGB Regional Director Carlos A. Tayag said the forum was held to enhance the agency’s information dissemination drive on various mining activities in the Region 1, which includes the provinces of Pangasinan, La Union, Ilocos Sur and Ilocos Norte.
Tayag noted that the growing sense of environmentalism of civil society is a challenge for the PMRBs to be articulate, creative and receptive to new ideas in discharging their mandated duties and responsibilities. – (PIO)
