City fast tracks family disaster-preparedness
THE gravity of Typhoon Yolanda’s aftermath has prompted the city government of Dagupan, considered a highly-vulnerable area, to hasten the imprlementation of its family disaster-preparedness program which seeks to help families plans to meet emergency situations particulalry during calamities.
Fernandez has directed the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) to immediately design a module that will serve as the city’s basis for training every member of a family household, i.e., where to go and what to do when a disaster strikes.
“Huwag na nating hintayin na mangyari sa atin ang nangyari sa Tacloban. We were lucky that we were spared, but we should not relax our guard. Every family must be trained on what they should do in times of calamities and disasters,” she said.
At last week’s Executive Session held at CSI Stadia, Fernandez and the department heads, listened to the story of Jose V. Andaya, mission president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Tacloban City who was among those who survived the onslaught of Typhoon ‘Yolanda’
Andaya said his experience is something he will never forget as he desrbied how the storm surge claimed thousands of lives and destroyed millions of properties.
Andaya said the casualties could have been minimized if people listened to the warnings.
He said the causlaties in Tacloban City could have been minizied if those living newar the sea did not ignore the government’s warnings. T
Andaya also stressed that it is very important that every member of the family must have a 72 hour survival kit.
Such a kit, he said, should help the familiy survive for three days when relief operations can be scarce. (CIO)
