A not-so peaceful election day in Urbiztondo
URBIZTONDO—A barangay kagawad, a re-electionist candidate, was shot dead while trying to pacify his neighbors who were beginning to create trouble Tuesday afternoon in Barangay Sawat here.
Victim Eduardo Balocating, 39, succumbed to a gunshot wound in his chest from a caliber .45 allegedly fired by suspect Ernesto Tapiador, 50.
He was rushed to Virgen Milagrosa Hospital but was declared dead on arrival by his attending physician.
Balocating lost in his re-election bid in Monday’s barangay election and Tapiador fled.
Meanwhile, Barangay Kagawad Violeto Quitaleg of Gueteb this town was jailed for election gun ban violation after policemen seized from him a caliber .45 while he was inside the police station to lodge a counter-complaint.
Quitaleg was the subject of a complaint filed by one Leandro Quitaleg at the police station. The barangay kagawad earnestly followed him to file his counter-complaint.
While the two engaged in an argument inside the police station, the policemen who noticed the handgun tucked on the waist of the barangay kagawad.
Quitaleg is now in jail. (Eva Visperas)
