LINGAYEN — The province of Pangasinan continues to reap awards. The latest was the national award presented by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), an attached agency of the Department of Agriculture.

During the “Gabi ng Parangal sa mga Kabalikat sa Pangisdaan” last October 18, BFAR awarded to Pangasinan the Gawad Pagkilala for its “Ilog Ko, Bilayen tan Aroen Ko” project, an integrated program for the restoration of the beauty and bounty of the river system in Pangasinan.

Pangasinan is the only provincial government in the country recognized by the BFAR for its significant impact in the protection, conservation and sustainable development in the fisheries industry.

In his letter to Governor Amado T. Espino, Jr., BFAR Director Asis G. Perez said: “As our partner, we recognize your essential role in rallying for the conservation and sustainability of fisheries and aquatic resources in the country.”

Provincial Agriculturist Dalisay A. Moya said the “Ilog Ko, Bilayen tan Aroen Ko,” project was the brainchild of Gov. Espino in 2008 to help save Pangasinan rivers and waterways by clearing and cleaning major river tributaries in the province.

Moya, who received the award along with Provincial Information Officer Butch Velasco, explained that among the components of the project are fish dispersal to communal bodies of water and tree planting along the province’s coastal and riverbanks that resulted to increased fish catch.

In 2011, Pangasinan contributed 75 percent in the region’s fish production.
